πŸ—ΊοΈ An emergency map that works with no signal

Signal disappears exactly when you need a map most β€” in a valley, underground, abroad with no data, or in the hour after something has gone wrong. SafeMap keeps the map on the phone so none of that matters.

SafeMap

A map that still works when the signal does not: save the area before you go, find the nearest help, and share exactly where you are. Free on Google Play, no account.

What it does

Who it is for

Hikers and drivers heading out of coverage, travellers avoiding roaming charges, and anyone who wants a fallback on the phone before they need one.

What to do before you lose signal

The part people get wrong is leaving it until the bars disappear. By then the map cannot download and the app cannot help. Five minutes of preparation at the trailhead or the last service station is the whole difference.

  1. Download the area while you still have a connection, and make it bigger than the route. The place you need a map is the place you did not plan to be.
  2. Know that satellite positioning is receive-only. Your phone works out where it is by listening, so it still knows your position with no network at all β€” losing signal does not lose your dot.
  3. Decide how you would send a position before you need to. Coordinates read out over a crackly call are worth more than a pin in an app the other person does not have.
  4. Check the battery, and remember that a screen at full brightness outdoors is the biggest drain on the phone. Carry the means to charge it or plan to use it sparingly.
  5. Tell someone the route and when you expect to be back. No app replaces that, and it is the one step that works even if the phone dies.

A map that needs a connection is a map that stops working exactly where you need it. That is the entire reason to have an offline one sitting on the phone long before the day you open it.

Questions people ask

Does this map work without internet?

Yes. Save the area while you have a connection and the map, the search and your position all keep working offline. GPS itself does not need mobile data.

How do I share my location with no signal?

The app turns your coordinates into a short message you can send the moment any connection returns, by SMS or any messaging app.

Is it free?

Yes, free on Google Play, with no subscription and no account.
