How a real shootout is run

The game follows the shape of the actual thing, so it is worth knowing what that shape is.

• Each side takes five kicks, alternating. If one team cannot be caught before all ten are taken, it stops there — a shootout can be over at 3–0 after eight kicks.
• If it is level after five each, it goes to sudden death: one kick each, repeating, until one scores and the other does not.
• The goalkeeper has to stay on the goal line until the ball is kicked, with at least part of one foot on or above it.
• The kicker may slow or feint during the run-up, but not once the run-up is finished. Stopping dead at the end and then poking it in is the foul that gets retaken.
• Everyone on the pitch at the final whistle is eligible, and both teams must finish with the same number of eligible players.

The part most penalty games leave out is the half where you are in goal, which is also the half that decides most shootouts. Taking a kick is a test of nerve. Facing one is a guess you have to commit to before you have the information — and that asymmetry is what makes the real thing unbearable to watch.
